Friday night we checked out Hops and Pie at 39th and Tennyson in North Denver (Google map), which opened in late September. We knew we would be treated to interesting pizza and a great tap list, but little did we know that it would be Firkin Friday with the Oskar Blues guys.
Just as I walked into the packed place, one of the guys from OB began introducing the firkin of double dry-hopped Gordon. At least a few of us teared up at the story of Gordon, a Vietnam vet and Colorado beer pioneer who died fighting a fire outside Oskar Blues’ hometown of Lyons. Then Tim of OB tapped the firkin. I’m no hophead, but I really enjoyed the low bitterness of the dry hops, and Linsey was left wishing it was available beyond the occasional firkin.
As for the pizza, we went for the skirt steak, mashed potato, gruyere, mushroom, bell pepper and onion pie. I don’t even like mashed potatoes, especially super creamy ones like these, but this supper on a pizza was great! I almost had to ask for a taste of the IPA mac & cheese our bar stool neighbor was eating, which smelled and looked amazing.
I’m happy to report that 11 of the 20 taps were Colorado beers, plus they had a nice selection of bombers, both seasonal and not. Definitely a destination for beer and pizza connoisseurs alike!
